Monday, April 11

Welcome Back! Hope you all had a fabulous spring break. Unfortunately we have to get back to work! Tomorrow you have a "mini-test" on Chapter 11. It covers sections 11-1 to 11-4. To prepare for the test, you can use the Triple Ripple Review that we did in class today or you can do problems from the book. Remember to fill out your notecard that you can use as a cheat sheet on the test.

Tuesday, March 29

Today we learned the Pythagorean Theorem. We can use this formula to find the missing side lengths of right triangles. Refer to your notes and examples if you need help when working on your homework.

Monday, March 28

Today we started Chapter 11 which focus is right triangles. Before we start with right triangles, we had to learn about irrational number and square roots. Remember irrational numbers are decimals that do not repeat and go on forever & ever.

Today we reviewed for the test on Chapter 8. This is going to be one of the most challenging tests so far but all of you have been doing a great job in class. I know that you are going to do GREAT!! Remember to study tonight by doing problems and also make your notecard cheat sheet.

Tuesday, March 22

Today we corrected homework from last night, went over the quiz we took last week Friday, and started to review for the test. If you finished your Practice Test in class, you should start studying tonight. You can fill out a notecard to use on the test. Here are somethings I recommend that you have on your notecard:

• How to tell if a relation(set) is a function
• Formula for slope and an example
• y = mx + b where m = slope, b = y-intercept, and (x,y) is a point on a line
• steps for graphing a linear equation
• steps for graphing a linear system
• steps for graphing a linear inequality
• how do you know if it is a dashed or solid line
• where do you shade
• graphing linear inequality systems
• scatter plots & trend lines

This is going to be one of the hardest tests you have taken so far so be sure to study!!

Monday, March 21

Today we learned how to graph linear inequalities and linear inequality systems. Everyone caught on very quickly because it it very similar to graphing linear equations. The only difference is the line that is drawn, it is either dashed or solid, and the graph is shaded.

Remember, Friday is the last day of the marking period, so the last day you can turn in missing work or make up quizzes is Wednesday.

Thursday, March 17

Today we spent the day review systems of equations and how to solve them by graphing. It seems that all of you have a much better understanding after working in groups. I think that you will be better prepared for the quiz which was postponed to tomorrow, Friday.

Wednesday, March 16

Today we learned how to solve systems of equations. This means that we found the solution that 2 equations have in common or where the 2 line intersect. Remember when graphing lines, first graph the y-intercept, then use slope to find 2 or 3 more points on the line. Finally, connect those points together with a line.

Tuesday, March 15

Today we learned two new things. First, we learned how to write an equation or rule for a line given 2 points. The steps for doing this are the following.
1. Find the slope.
2. Using the slope and a point find the y-intercept.
3. Rewrite the equation in slope-intercept form, replacing m and b.

The second thing we learned was how to draw a trend line and write and equation for that trend line. We can use the trend line to estimate information on the graph.

Today we went over the quiz. I am so proud of all of you. You did a great job!! Today's lesson covered scatter plots. We did an activity where we compared height and hand span. We talked about how scatter plots have positive correlation, negative correlation, or no correlation.

Today we continued the lesson from last week Thursday on Slope & Y-Intercept. Thursday we learned how to calculate slope. Today we learned what the y-intercept is and how to use slope and y-intercept to graph lines.

Friday, March 4

Because over half the class was gone today at Band Festival, we just reviewed slope some more. There is no homework this weekend. Remember to be studying the notes that we take in class because this is all new and it can be challenging!!

Thursday, March 3

Today we learned about slope, and that it is the slant of a line. We learned to calculate slope by using points on a graph and calculating the rise over run. We also learned how to calculate the slope when given 2 points, we used the formula for slope.
Homework is modified tonight because I ran out of class time to explain everything, so tonight's homework is listed below. We will finish the lesson Monday because most of the class will be gone to band festival. For those of you left behind, we will do some more practice with slope.

Today we continued Chapter 8 as we graphed equations. When we graphed today, we used a t-chart to record all our x & y values and then we graphed the points and connected them with a straight line.

Today's less on was called Transforming Formulas. In the lesson we learned how to solve formulas for a specific variable. One example would be as follows...

Using the the formula for area of a rectangle, A = lh, solve for h.

Happy Valentine's Day! Today's lesson focused on writing equations from story problems. Many times we just take the numbers and multiply, divide, add or subtract them to get an answer, not always knowing if that answer is right. If students take the time to write an equation that represents that situation and then solve the equation, they are more likely to have a correct answer. There is a quiz tomorrow covering 7-1 to 7-4.

Today lesson focused on solving multi-step equations that have fractions and decimals. We also took a survey about the Camp Roger experience.

Thursday, February 10

Today we worked on solving equations involving the distributive property. Before solving these types of equations, you either have to add like terms or distribute to get rid of the parentheses. After doing this, solving is the same as what we have been doing. We also talked about consecutive integers, which are numbers that are in a row, for example 23, 24, 25 are consecutive integers.

Today we started Chapter 7 and the first lesson focused on solving 2 step equations. This was pretty easy for everyone since we have been solving equations all year.

Today we had our last lesson in Chapter 6. Students learned about percent mark-up and percent discount. There were several real-life examples of how businesses use math to price items that they sell as well as price items for sales.

Today we learned how to solve percent problems using equations. Now students have 2 ways to solve percent problems, using proportions and using equations. You may use either method to solve percent problems.

Today we corrected the exam review and I answered a questions that they students had. During the last 10 minutes, we played a quick game of Jeopardy to review for the exam.

The best way for you to review for the exam is to DO PROBLEMS! On my webpage, in the attachment section, there is a copy of the exam review along with the exam review answer key. Please use these to study. You can print out a new exam review and do it again.

Today we participated in the Martin Luther King March in downtown Grand Rapids. Because of the March and the MLK activities at school, we did not spend time working on exam reviews. If you did not finish your exam review, it is homework tonight. Tomorrow I will be giving you a grade for the completeness of your review.

QUIZ DAY!! Today students took a quiz on Sections 6-1 to 6-4. They did a great job. Most students received 100%....YEAH!! Grades will be posted on Edline tonight and in class tomorrow.
The exam review was also given out today. It is not due until Tuesday. Friday's class will be devoted to working on the review. Monday there will not be class time to work on the review since we will be at the Martin Luther King March downtown.

Today's lesson covered similar figures and scale drawing. We used proportions to find the lengths of missing sides of shapes, tall objects, and distances on maps.

Thursday is a quiz covering 6-1 to 6-4. Students will be required to show work. If they do not show their work, they will lose 1/2 the points on the problem.

Exam reviews will be given out on Thursday. We will have time to work on the review during class on Friday. On Monday we will be at the MLK walk so there will not be time to work on the review Monday. The review will be due Tuesday at the start of class. We will answer any questions on Tuesday.

We have a new addition to our class, Ms. Schram. Ms. Schram is a student from Western Michigan University who will be co-teaching with me for the next 20 weeks. It will be great to have another teacher in the room to help the kids out. So far, Ms. Schram has fit in very well!!

Today we learned how to solve proportions and how to solve story problems using proportions. Remember to show ALL of your steps when solving problems. Even though the problems are easy, we are setting up good habits for when you take math in the future.

Today we talked about ratios, rates, and unit rates. Instead of homework, we did an activity in class. We calculated the unit price of various items to determine which was the better buy. This is a skill that I use quite frequently in the grocery store. I did not grade the Chapter 5 Retest yet. I will do that this weekend and have grades posted by Monday.
